Neural modification by paired sensory stimuli
نویسنده
چکیده
With repetitive stimulation of two sensory pathways which are intact within the isolated nervous system of Hermissenda, features of a cellular conditioning paradigm were identified. Type A photoreceptors, unlike type B photoreceptors, produce fewer impulses in response to light following temporally specific pairing of light stimuli with rotation stimuli. Type A photoreceptor impulse wave-forms are also specifically changed by such stimulus regimens. These findings can be explained, at least in part, by increased inhibition of type A cells by type B cells after stimulus pairing.

Cortical Gating of Oropharyngeal Sensory Stimuli
Somatosensory evoked potentials provide a measure of cortical neuronal activation in response to various types of sensory stimuli. In order to prevent flooding of the cortex with redundant information various sensory stimuli are gated cortically such that response to stimulus 2 (S2) is significantly reduced in amplitude compared to stimulus 1 (S1). Upper airway protective mechanisms, such as sw...
متن کاملRespiratory-related evoked potential measures of respiratory sensory gating.
The purpose of this study was to demonstrate a neural respiratory gating system using a paired stimuli paradigm. The N1 peak of the respiratory-related evoked potential (RREP) represents early perceptual processing of respiratory sensory information. This is similar to the N100 peak shown with tactile sensation, where the second peak amplitude (S2) of the N100 peak from the somatosensory evoked...
متن کاملMotivational Salience Modulates Early Visual Cortex Responses across Task Sets
Motivationally relevant stimuli benefit from strengthened sensory processing. It is unclear, however, if motivational value of positive and negative valence has similar or dissociable effects on early visual processing. Moreover, whether these perceptual effects are task-specific, stimulus-specific, or more generally feature-based is unknown. In this study, we compared the effects of positive a...
متن کاملState-dependent changes in cortical gain control as measured by auditory evoked responses to varying intensity stimuli.
STUDY OBJECTIVES Auditory evoked potential (AEP) components correspond to sequential activation of brain structures within the auditory pathway and reveal neural activity during sensory processing. To investigate state-dependent modulation of stimulus intensity response profiles within different brain structures, we assessed AEP components across both stimulus intensity and state. DESIGN We i...
متن کاملTracking the evolution of neural network activity in uninterrupted long-term MEA recordings
Most cell culture studies rely on taking representative, quasi-static data snapshots during limited time windows. To permit continuous experimentation, we devised an automated perfusion system based on microfluidic cell culture chambers for microelectrode arrays (MEAs). The design is based on a perfusion cap fabricated in replica-molding technology and on a hermetically shielded, gravity-driven...
